*Estimated from contemporary 1984 Audi Sport quattro Group B specifications. The exact technical specification of the Pikes Peak entry has not been confirmed and may have differed from contemporary World Rally Championship cars through altitude-specific engine calibration, turbocharger settings, gearing, cooling systems, suspension setup, weight reduction measures, and other modifications developed specifically for competition at Pikes Peak.

Following success at Pike’s Peak with the quattro driven by John Buffum, Audi Sport brought its new Group B-homologated Sport quattro S1 to contest the 1984 Pike’s Peak International Hillclimb with French rally driver Michèle Mouton.

New to the mountain and unsure she’d be able to memorize the entire course in time, Michèle insisted on bringing her WRC co-driver Fabrizia Pons. Driving with a co-driver isn’t common practice at Pike’s Peak.

After its class victory in Colorado, the car went on to see use by Audi Sport in two more rounds of hte World Rally Championship during that 1984 season.

IDENTIFICATION

Typically registration plates do not change cars. This would suggest that the same race chassis continued to be used and log two more wins in the 1984 World Rally Championship season. Period photographs indicate the car with registration IN-NH 73 registration tags also carried a distinctive variation of Audi Sport’s factory livery. While employing the familiar red, gray, and black Audi Sport striping, the graphics appear arranged in a more pronounced forward-pointing pattern than seen on most contemporary works Sport quattros. Evidence suggests the same basic painted livery may have been retained through its subsequent appearances on Rallye Deutschland and the 3-Städte Rallye later in 1984. It placed first in both races.
