Motorsport Homologations:

Archival material and Audi Tradition documentation confirm the existence of a sedan prototype built in June 1994. The documented build date places the sedan prototype within the production window of the RS2 Avant, indicating that development experimentation continued even after series production had commenced.

Externally, the prototype featured hallmark RS2 components such as Porsche Cup 17-inch wheels, Porsche-sourced Brembo braking hardware, and RS-specific chassis tuning. Unlike the production Avant, however, the sedan configuration was never approved for series manufacture.

Audi and Porsche evaluated multiple body configurations before finalizing the Avant estate as the sole production variant.

This RS2 appears virtually production ready in dark metallic grey paint unlike the RS2 Coupé (B4) prototype and RS4 (C4) sedans that have been referenced in the past. Some legend places it as associated with Ferdinand Piëch who may have used the car in some capacity at some point. It has been seen at times with a registration plate suggesting it did see at least some road use.

The car primarily resides with Audi Tradition and specifically their Ingolstadt-based collection. It does appear with some regularity at events and in special displays or the rotating paternoster display at Audi museum mobile.

The 2.2-liter 20-valve turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine formed the technical basis of the prototype. Porsche’s involvement included intake and exhaust revisions, turbocharger optimization, and chassis calibration work. The development cars served as test beds for drivetrain refinement, cooling improvements, and braking validation prior to the RS2 Avant’s public debut at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Ultimately, Audi elected to produce the RS2 exclusively as an Avant, positioning it as a high-performance estate rather than a sedan. The limousine prototype remains an important part of RS development history, illustrating that the RS2 program initially explored broader model applications before narrowing its production focus.
