OVERVIEW
The Audi RS 6 GTO Concept is a one-off design study unveiled in 2020 to commemorate more than 40 years of Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive technology. Created by a team of apprentices at Audi’s Neckarsulm site, the concept reimagines the production Audi RS 6 Avant as a modern tribute to the legendary Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO race car of the late 1980s.
Blending contemporary performance wagon engineering with historic motorsport-inspired styling, the RS 6 GTO Concept was conceived as both a celebration of Audi’s racing heritage and a showcase for the skills of its trainee program.
DEVELOPMENT & PROJECT BACKGROUND
The project was carried out by a group of Audi apprentices in Neckarsulm, working alongside the Audi design team and technical specialists. Over a development period of approximately six months, the team transformed a standard RS 6 Avant into a track-focused design study incorporating extensive visual and structural modifications.
The concept formed part of broader celebrations of Audi’s quattro legacy, which began with the original quattro in 1980 and expanded into multiple racing disciplines, including rallying, touring cars, and endurance racing.

DESIGN & MOTORSPORT INSPIRATION
The RS 6 GTO Concept pays direct homage to the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO, a competition car built for the 1989 IMSA GTO championship in the United States. That race car became known for its boxy fender flares, aggressive aerodynamics, and distinctive red, white, and gray livery.
The concept adopts a similar color scheme, along with white wheels, a prominent red rear wing, and exaggerated bodywork. The front fascia was redesigned to create a large, rectangular black mesh grille flanked by functional cooling openings, echoing the race car’s squared-off appearance.
Additional exterior modifications include widened fenders, large aerodynamic splitters, side-exit exhaust outlets, hood vents, and an enlarged rear diffuser, giving the wagon a visual character closer to a touring car than a road-going estate.
The look and feel of the RS 6 GTO would eventually influence the development of the Audi RS 6 Avant GT.
CHASSIS & BODY MODIFICATIONS
Although based on the production RS 6 Avant platform, the RS 6 GTO Concept incorporates structural and aerodynamic changes aimed at a track-oriented appearance and stance. The widened bodywork allows for a broader track and larger wheels fitted with high-performance tires.
A roll cage was integrated into the rear of the cabin, both for visual authenticity and structural reinforcement. The use of lightweight materials, including carbon fiber components, further underscores the motorsport-inspired theme.

INTERIOR
The interior was reconfigured to reflect a racing environment. Rear seating was removed and replaced with a white roll cage, while the front seats were upgraded to Recaro racing buckets with multi-point harnesses. Safety nets replaced the front side windows, and non-essential trim was reduced to emphasize weight savings and functionality.
Despite these modifications, elements of the standard RS 6 dashboard and digital interface were retained, maintaining a connection to the road-going model.
POWERTRAIN
Audi did not officially detail mechanical upgrades for the RS 6 GTO Concept, and the vehicle is widely understood to retain the production RS 6 Avant’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. In standard form, this engine produces approximately 441 kW (591 hp) and is paired with Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
While the concept’s visual presentation suggests race-level performance, it was developed primarily as a design and engineering showcase rather than a homologated competition vehicle.

PUBLIC APPEARANCES
Following its initial reveal in 2020, the RS 6 GTO Concept was displayed at several automotive events and exhibitions, including its public debut at Top Marques Monaco. Its appearance underscored Audi’s strategy of using concept vehicles to celebrate brand heritage while highlighting the contributions of its apprentice programs.
SIGNIFICANCE
The Audi RS 6 GTO Concept represents a fusion of Audi’s past and present: a modern high-performance wagon styled to evoke one of the brand’s most dramatic racing cars. It also highlights the role of Audi’s training initiatives in fostering creativity and technical expertise among the next generation of engineers and designers.
Though never intended for production, the RS 6 GTO Concept stands as a visual tribute to Audi’s IMSA racing history and a demonstration of how historic motorsport themes can be reinterpreted through contemporary design.
