OVERVIEW
The Audi Q5 Custom Concept was introduced at the Wörthersee GTI Meeting as part of Audi’s broader “100 Years of Audi” celebrations. Developed as a high-performance reinterpretation of the then-new Q5 (8R), the concept explored the potential for a more aggressive, sport-focused variant of Audi’s compact SUV.
Presented alongside other performance-oriented builds within the Volkswagen Group, the Q5 Custom Concept combined increased output, chassis modifications, and visual changes to position it closer to Audi’s RS model philosophy, though no production version was announced at the time.
DESIGN AND EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS
The Q5 Custom Concept retained the core body structure of the production Q5 but introduced a series of visual and functional enhancements. The exterior was finished in Daytona Grey with contrasting red accents, emphasizing its performance intent.
A wider track—expanded by approximately 90 mm (3.5 inches)—altered the vehicle’s stance, while the ride height was reduced by roughly 60 mm (2.4 inches). These changes lowered the center of gravity and visually aligned the concept more closely with Audi’s RS models.
The concept also featured a revised body kit with more pronounced lower intakes and side sills. Wheel design drew from Audi’s RS lineup, with 21-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels and a more aggressive offset to match the widened track.
POWERTRAIN
Power came from a supercharged 3.0-liter TFSI V6, producing 300 kW (402 hp). This represented a significant increase over the standard Q5’s output at the time.
Performance figures included a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of approximately 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). These figures placed the concept within the range of contemporary high-performance SUVs and aligned it with Audi’s emerging performance SUV strategy.
Power was delivered through Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, maintaining the brand’s standard approach to traction and stability in higher-output applications.
CHASSIS AND DYNAMICS
In addition to increased power, the Q5 Custom Concept featured chassis modifications aimed at improving handling. The widened track and reduced ride height contributed to greater lateral stability and reduced body roll.
Suspension tuning was adjusted to match the concept’s performance focus, though detailed technical specifications were not fully disclosed. The combination of wider stance, lower ride height, and larger wheels suggested a setup oriented toward on-road performance rather than off-road capability.
POSITIONING AND CONTEXT
At the time of its debut, Audi did not offer a full RS variant of the Q5. The Q5 Custom Concept therefore served as an early exploration of what a high-performance version of the platform could look like.
The concept arrived during a period when performance SUVs were gaining traction in the market, with competitors expanding offerings in the segment. Internally, it also aligned with Audi’s increasing emphasis on S and RS variants across its lineup.
LEGACY
The Q5 Custom Concept remained a one-off and did not enter production. However, it can be viewed as a precursor to later high-performance Audi SUVs, including the Audi SQ5 and subsequent RS-badged SUV models.
While not directly leading to a production model, the concept demonstrated the feasibility and market interest in higher-output variants of Audi’s compact SUV platform, contributing to the brand’s broader expansion into the performance SUV segment.
