OVERVIEW
The South African A4 DTM brought Audiβs touring car commemorative model to another right-hand-drive market, extending its reach beyond Europe. Its origins lay in the championship-winning 2004 season, when Mattias EkstrΓΆm, Audi Sport Team Abt and Audi secured the DTM driversβ, teamsβ and manufacturersβ titles respectively.
The South African offering differed from the narrowly defined British allocation. A contemporary local road test records two derivatives: one retaining the regular 147 kW engine output and another producing 162 kW and 300 Nm. The latter was listed at R307,700.
That distinction matters when documenting surviving cars. The DTM designation in South Africa did not, by itself, establish that a car had the uprated engine. Output, transmission and drivetrain should therefore be recorded against the individual derivative rather than inferred from its appearance.

WHAT MADE THE DTM EDITION DIFFERENT
The DTM Editionβs identity came from a coordinated set of changes to the B7 A4. The international program combined distinctive bumpers, carbon-fiber details and closely spaced multi-spoke wheels with a cabin incorporating Recaro seats and materials associated with the S4.
The South African road test specifically noted the bumpers, lowered suspension and extensive suede-like interior treatment. Those observations establish that the local car carried the editionβs visual and tactile character, alongside its market-specific engine offering.

RECARO SEATS AND S4 CABIN DETAILS
The established DTM Edition interior centered on deeply bolstered, S4-style Recaro sports seats. Leather side bolsters framed Nardia microfiber centers, with silver stitching providing contrast. Nardia also appeared on the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake.
Carbon-fiber dashboard and door inlays provided another link to the S4. DTM sill plates and silver-piped floor mats completed the treatment. These details are relevant to identifying an original DTM Edition interior, although their standard fitment across both South African derivatives requires confirmation from local factory documentation.

WHEELS WITH A DIRECT RACING REFERENCE
The international DTM Editionβs 18-inch, 15-spoke wheels deliberately referenced the competition car. Their closely spaced spokes echoed the OZ Racing wheels used in Audiβs DTM program and became one of the road carβs most recognizable features.
Alongside the specific bumpers and lowered stance, the wheels supplied a clear motorsport connection while retaining the production A4βs body proportions. For a South African archive record, original wheel fitment should be distinguished from the larger aftermarket wheels now found on some surviving examples.

COLORS AND THE DTM CONNECTION
The European and British cars offered Imola Yellow, Light Silver metallic, Sprint Blue pearl effect and Phantom Black pearl effect. A complete South African color list has not yet been established, so that four-color palette should not automatically be treated as the local ordering range.
The visual connection remains relevant to the editionβs design. Sprint Blue recalled Audiβs Red Bull-sponsored DTM entries, yellow echoed the HasserΓΆder cars from 2004 and silver appeared across other factory liveries. These associations explain the paletteβs suitability without establishing identical race-car paint codes.

LEGACY
The South African A4 DTM demonstrates how Audi adapted the edition for different markets. Its documented choice of engine outputs contrasts with the UKβs single uprated quattro specification and makes a separate regional archive entry worthwhile.
It also extends Audiβs touring car story in a country with its own history of successful competition A4s. The B7 DTM Edition celebrated the German racing program through a roadgoing model, while its South African specification gave that theme a distinct local expression.
