OVERVIEW
The Museo Tazio Nuvolari is a motorsport museum in Mantua, Italy dedicated to preserving the life and achievements of Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari. Located within the restored fifteenth-century Church of Carmelino along Mantua’s historic Percorso del Principe, the museum houses the champion’s personal sporting legacy, which was bequeathed to the Automobile Club Mantova upon his death.
Originally opened in 1985 in Mantua’s Palazzo del Podestà , the museum moved to its current location in 2012 following an extensive restoration project timed to coincide with the 120th anniversary of Nuvolari’s birth.
The museum is widely regarded as the principal repository of Nuvolari-related artifacts and documents, chronicling his motorcycle racing successes, Grand Prix victories, endurance racing achievements and post-war career. Through trophies, medals, photographs, correspondence, race programs and multimedia displays, it presents a comprehensive account of one of motorsport’s most celebrated competitors.
COLLECTION
The museum’s collection includes:
- Race trophies, plaques and cups won throughout Nuvolari’s career
- Gold medals and sporting honors
- Original photographs and documents
- Personal memorabilia
- Audiovisual exhibits and historical film footage
- Race programs, posters and archival materials
- Selected motorcycles and racing cars associated with his career
- The famous gold tortoise gifted to Nuvolari by Gabriele D’Annunzio
- Artifacts from his final racing years, including items connected to his Ferrari and Cisitalia campaigns.
AUTO UNION SIGNIFICANCE
While the museum covers Nuvolari’s entire racing career rather than focusing on a single manufacturer, Auto Union occupies an important place within the exhibits due to the driver’s association with the marque during the late 1930s. Nuvolari raced for Auto Union from 1938 through 1939, scoring some of the most famous victories of his career, including the 1938 Italian Grand Prix at Monza and the 1939 Belgrade Grand Prix.
Visitors will find Auto Union represented within the broader narrative of Nuvolari’s career through photographs, trophies, documents and racing memorabilia. However, the museum is not an Auto Union museum in the same way that the August Horch Museum focuses on Audi and Auto Union history. Instead, Auto Union forms one chapter within a larger story that spans Nuvolari’s motorcycle racing years, Alfa Romeo successes, Scuderia Ferrari period, Auto Union campaigns and post-war appearances.
For Audi and Auto Union-focused visitors, the museum’s greatest significance lies in its preservation of original material connected to Nuvolari himself, one of the most important drivers in Auto Union’s pre-war Grand Prix program and a figure frequently cited by Ferdinand Porsche as “the greatest driver of the past, the present and the future.”
TAZIO NUVOLARI ORIGINALS COLLECTION
Adjacent to the museum experience is the Tazio Nuvolari Originals Collection, a merchandise and lifestyle brand developed in cooperation with the museum and Automobile Club Mantova. The collection offers apparel, accessories and commemorative items inspired by Nuvolari’s racing career, personal style and historical correspondence.
The museum’s gift shop and online store feature official products from the collection, allowing visitors to acquire licensed memorabilia connected to the Flying Mantuan’s legacy.
