OVERVIEW
The 2014 GTI Treffen brought the Volkswagen Group’s brands and their enthusiast communities to Reifnitz on the southern shore of Austria’s Wörthersee. For Audi, the centerpiece was the A3 clubsport quattro concept, an S3 Sedan-based show car fitted with a 525-PS turbocharged five-cylinder engine. Audi also displayed the TT quattro sport concept, which had debuted earlier that year at the Geneva Motor Show, alongside ten production models. The official Treffen ran from May 28 through May 31, although enthusiast gatherings around the lake began well before the organized show opened.
Wörthersee tended to operate on two timelines. Earlier gatherings drew enthusiasts intent on seeing one another’s cars; by the official show days, Reifnitz had become a crowded, ticketed exhibition with manufacturer stands, vendors and cars occupying nearly every available space. Visitors also arrived by boat from other lakeside towns. The cars themselves were never entirely static: some stayed parked all day, while others circulated slowly through the village as spectators watched from the roadside.

AUDI A3 CLUBSPORT QUATTRO CONCEPT
Audi used Wörthersee to present the A3 clubsport quattro concept, the principal new car in its 2014 display. Although it carried the A3 name, the study was based on the S3 Sedan. Its 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder produced 386 kW (525 PS) and 600 Nm of torque, with widened bodywork giving the compact sedan a more aggressive stance. Audi quoted a 0–100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h.
At the time, the combination invited an obvious question: was this a preview of an RS 3 Sedan? In his contemporary report, Achorn identified the five-cylinder engine and flared bodywork as clues to where Audi might take the A3 family. The concept was far more powerful and visually extreme than a production car needed to be, but it placed a high-performance five-cylinder sedan in front of the Volkswagen Group enthusiasts most likely to understand its appeal.

AUDI TT QUATTRO SPORT CONCEPT
The TT quattro sport concept was Audi’s second show car at Reifnitz. It was displayed at Wörthersee, not unveiled there: the concept had made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014. Based on the new-generation TT, it paired a 420-PS 2.0-liter TFSI engine with lightweight construction, a fixed rear wing and a more overtly competition-inspired interior. Its appearance supported the “Audi Sport” theme of Audi’s stand.
Together, the two concepts showed different performance directions for Audi’s compact cars. The A3 clubsport quattro explored the prospect of a five-cylinder performance sedan, while the TT quattro sport pushed the newly introduced TT toward a lighter, more track-focused interpretation.

AUDI AND THE VOLKSWAGEN GROUP AT REIFNITZ
Audi’s display was part of a larger official presence by Volkswagen, SEAT and Škoda. Volkswagen showed the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo, a physical version of a car conceived for the Gran Turismo video game. Its presentation by series creator Kazunori Yamauchi illustrated the Treffen’s unusual reach: a lakeside gathering of owners had become a venue for concept debuts and appearances by prominent figures from both the automotive and gaming industries.
Ferdinand Piëch attended with senior Volkswagen Group and Audi executives, including Martin Winterkorn, Rupert Stadler, Ulrich Hackenberg, Luca de Meo, Marc Lichte and Heinz Hollerweger. During the 2014 event, Piëch was named an honorary citizen of the municipality of Maria Wörth. His presence underscored a distinctive feature of Wörthersee at its height: the people directing the brands could be seen at the same event as the owners who modified, displayed and drove their cars there.
Beyond the manufacturer stands, Reifnitz was an event in motion. Vendors occupied sidewalks and open spaces, boats carried visitors across the lake and cars cruised the village’s slow circuit. That movement made spectators part of the show. An owner could park and talk about a car or drive through town and become part of a procession that changed throughout the day.

SIGNIFICANCE
For Audi, the 2014 Treffen is most closely associated with the Wörthersee debut of the A3 clubsport quattro concept. Its five-cylinder A3 Sedan-based formula offered an early, exaggerated look at the potential for an RS 3 Sedan. The TT quattro sport concept added a second, distinct expression of compact Audi performance, even though its world premiere had already taken place in Geneva.
Audi and its Volkswagen Group counterparts put official displays in the middle of a gathering that owners had made their own. In Fourtitude’s contemporary account, the scale, the weeks of informal activity surrounding the official dates and the continual movement of cars through Reifnitz made it unlike a conventional show. The manufacturers provided major attractions, but the enthusiast community gave Wörthersee its character.
