Is This Porsche Boxster EV Test Mule a “TT in Disguise”?

Back on March 19, ooooIYKYK posted its first ooooIntel story tracking the development over time of the rumored “next-generation TT”. In reality, the car may not become a TT at all, but that’s a whole other story. And while the project known internally as “TT Evo” or “C-Sport” has been allegedly on-again-off-again, the latest spy photos making the rounds seem to confirm it’s decidedly on again.

What’s the evidence? Click through to the autoevolution.com news story with the photos in question. What they show is a car remarkably similar if not identical to the Porsche 718 Boxster EV we’ve seen testing before.

There’s only one real difference between that car and the one in these photos, but it’s a substantive one. That difference is the registration tag. Our photos show a plate beginning with “BB”, designating it as a car registered in Baden-Württemberg that’s consistent with other 718 EV mules that have been spied.

In the case of the car seen on autoevolution, the car has a plate beginning with “IN”, which designates as the originating registration location as Audi’s home town of Ingolstadt. Generally, any Audi mule has an “IN” or an “HN” designating it as registered in Heilbronn, i.e, Neckarsalm.

What does this mean exactly? It means Audi is testing the EV Boxster because the Porsche-developed architecture known as “Mission R” or “E-Core” on which the 718 EV is believed to be based is also the same hardware set Audi aims to use on the “TT Mk3”.

As was highlighted in the now updated ooooIntel file for the TT Evo / C-Sport project, this car won’t necessarily be badged a TT. While a next-generation TT is one possibility and we know Audi design boss Massimo Frascella is fond of the Mk1 TT design and aims to bring back the a cleaner design focus exemplified in that particular design, Audi sources have dropped enough clues so as to give themselves latitude. Something harking the original quattro may very well be another direction this goes.
