A.I.Imagined: skysphere for the Road

The subject of EVs may be a controversial one in automotive circles, but less debatable is the attractiveness of the 2021 Audi skysphere concept. Audi’s Los Angeles-based design team developed the car to leave an impression at the exclusive Quail a Motorsports Gathering during Monterey Car Week, and that it did – harkening the elegance of pre-war roadsters such as the Horch 853.

The idea then with the renderings below was to capture the long grand touring extravagance of the skysphere concept seen above, but in a more production-looking way. While the skysphere could stow its steering wheel for autonomous driving or shorten its wheelbase for times when the steering wheel was out and spirited driving was the plan, a production skysphere would likely have none of that and be a bit more in need of real world proportions.

So what is this car exactly? Well, it’s an A.I. rendering so it really doesn’t have to be anything, but I envision it as either an EV such as Audi devised with the concept, or perhaps a grand touring roadster based on the same Porsche MSB modular front mid-engine architecture that underpins the Panamera as well as the Bentley Continental and Flying Spur models. Those cars lend themselves to the place a Horch-inspired Audi roadster would occupy, though it’s doubtful the market needs a Continental GT competitor from the same company that manages Bentley’s overall business.

Even still, the design is beautiful and ended up doing very well with a large and positive response on the @4Rings.AI Instagram account.
