Rumor: Audi Nuvolari Spyder

Could the newly unveiled Audi Nuvolari Spyder on deck once the announced 499 Nuvolari “coupes” have been sold?

The speculation originates with Top Gear, which noted an intriguing exchange during its interview with Audi CEO Gernot Döllner following the reveal of the limited-production Nuvolari coupe.

When asked whether Audi might build another 499 examples as a Spyder, Döllner reportedly responded simply: “Not 499.” While stopping short of confirming an open variant, the answer has fueled speculation that an open-top variant of the Nuvolari could already be under consideration, possibly in a smaller production run than the coupe’s 499-unit allocation.

In theory, Audi could position a Nuvolari Spyder as a separate and even more exclusive expansion of the original Nuvolari hard top. Production numbers, if approved, would likely be lower and pricing higher than the coupe’s roughly €600,000 starting point.

What form such a car might take remains unknown. A traditional fabric roof would echo Audi’s past R8 Spyder offerings, while a removable targa-style roof would more closely match the Concept C and likely be more suitable to the Nuvolari’s clean, architectural design language.

Of course, this sort of story begs for renderings and so we’ve created the mix you see here. Critically, these are not real and are watermarked as renderings so there isn’t any doubt.

Worth noting, there’s not much to see here. Döllner didn’t really say much at all on this subject. Still, the idea is a natural one and not inconsistent with other micro batch specials Lamborghini has done before.

For now, Audi has confirmed only the coupe, with first customer deliveries scheduled for the first half of 2027. Still, Döllner’s carefully worded response has ensured that rumors of a Nuvolari Spyder will likely continue until Audi either confirms—or definitively denies—the possibility.
