Gran Turismo 7 Heads to Pikes Peak & Audi’s 1987 S1 E2 looks Right at Home

Gran Turismo 7’s latest update may be headlined by a collection of modern endurance racing prototypes, but for Audi enthusiasts the most interesting addition could be found in the background of Polyphony Digital’s promotional images.

With Update 1.70, Pikes Peak has been added to Gran Turismo 7 as a featured Scapes location, allowing players to photograph their cars at the legendary Colorado mountain course. While the venue is not yet available as a drivable track, its inclusion marks the first meaningful appearance of Pikes Peak in the franchise in years and immediately sparked excitement among fans.

Among the cars featured in promotional imagery for the new location is Audi’s iconic Sport quattro S1 E2, the fire-breathing Group B machine that Walter Röhrl famously drove to victory at the 1987 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The S1 E2 has already been part of Gran Turismo 7’s vehicle roster, but seeing it posed on America’s Mountain feels particularly fitting given the car’s place in hillclimb history.

Röhrl’s 1987 run remains one of the defining moments in Audi motorsport lore. Driving the approximately 600-horsepower Sport quattro S1 E2, he became the first driver to conquer the mountain in under 11 minutes, setting a new course record and cementing the car’s status as one of the most recognizable Pikes Peak competitors ever built.

While many players were hoping the update would finally bring the full Pikes Peak course to the game, Polyphony Digital has so far limited the venue to Scapes photography mode. The developer has held licensing rights associated with the event for years, leading to continued speculation that a fully drivable version of the course could eventually appear in a future Gran Turismo title.

Beyond the addition of Pikes Peak, Update 1.70 introduces five new vehicles focused largely on top-level endurance racing. New additions include the BMW M Hybrid V8 ’25, Ferrari 499P ’23, Peugeot 9X8 ’25, Porsche 963 ’24 and a Porsche 911 Turbo S Safety Car based on the 992-generation model.

The update also adds a new Café Extra Menu centered around hybrid prototypes, several new World Circuit events, additional engine swaps and various gameplay improvements. New races include Gr.1 Prototype Series events at Watkins Glen, Le Mans and Sardegna, along with fresh challenges at Fishermans Ranch and Eiger Nordwand Reverse.

For Audi fans, however, the highlight is easy to spot. More than three decades after Röhrl’s record-setting drive, the Sport quattro S1 E2 has once again returned to Pikes Peak—even if, for now, it’s only for the photo shoot.
