In Detail: Audi A6 allroad (C9) with Wider Body, Expanded Off-Road Capability & EU Spec TDI PHEV Power

The Audi A6 allroad returns for a fifth generation with a broader mission than ever before. While the formula remains familiar—a raised long roof body style combining comfort, cargo versatility and genuine all-weather capability—the latest model receives substantial changes underneath and beyond the sheetmetal. A significantly wider body, standard adaptive air suspension, available all-wheel steering and the introduction of a plug-in hybrid powertrain headline the updates. Audi says the result is an A6 allroad that is more capable on rough terrain while also offering improved efficiency, technology and everyday usability.

Will it arrive this way in the USA? We’ve heard it is coming at some point, though it’s notable Audi of America hasn’t dropped confirmation nor engine specification given the version you see below boasts an unlikely powertrain for North America. We’ll watch the news closely today in order to see if that drops and sharing it if they do, and if not we’re going to theorize on how we’d build it if we were an Audi product planner. In the meantime, check out full details on the car, plus videos embedded in the story and a full photo gallery at the bottom.

WIDER THAN EVER

With the new A6 allroad, Audi is introducing the most substantial redesign in the model’s 27-year history. For the first time, the allroad adopts a dedicated wide-body configuration that is said to match that of the RS 6, measuring 111 mm wider than the standard A6 Avant and 84 mm wider than the outgoing allroad.

The result is a vehicle measuring 5,016 mm long, 1,986 mm wide and between 1,479 and 1,508 mm tall depending on suspension position. Track width grows significantly as well, increasing by 74 mm over the A6 Avant at the front and 70 mm at the rear.

Ground clearance is up 34 mm compared with the standard A6 Avant and 16 mm higher than the previous-generation allroad. Standard 19-inch wheels contribute to the increased ride height, while optional wheel packages extend to 21 inches.

Visually, the model continues traditional allroad cues including protective cladding, underbody protection elements, unique side skirts and hexagonal design themes used throughout the front fascia, air intakes and rear diffuser area. Functional air outlets behind the front wheels further emphasize the wider body.

Eight exterior colors will be available including Arkona White, Plateau Gray, Florett Silver, Madeira Brown, Midnight Green, Firmament Blue, Mythos Black and Glacier White.

STANDARD ADAPTIVE AIR SUSPENSION

Every A6 allroad receives a model-specific adaptive air suspension as standard equipment.

The system offers 55 mm of ride-height adjustment, 25 mm more range than the adaptive suspension fitted to the standard A6 Avant. In normal operation, the allroad rides 34 mm higher than the Avant.

Two dedicated off-road drive modes increase ride height by an additional 15 mm. A separate lift function raises the vehicle another 20 mm beyond that at speeds up to 35 km/h for navigating particularly difficult terrain.

In Dynamic mode, the body lowers by 20 mm to improve stability and handling. At highway speeds above 120 km/h, the suspension automatically lowers to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve efficiency.

Audi has also revised steering hardware and suspension mounting points. Progressive steering is standard and features increased rigidity throughout the steering system, including stiffer mounting points and revised front suspension geometry intended to improve steering response and feedback.

ALL-WHEEL STEERING AND QUATTRO

quattro all-wheel drive remains standard across the range.

A significant chassis addition is all-wheel steering. It comes standard on the plug-in hybrid model and is optional on the V6 TDI.

At speeds below approximately 60 km/h, the rear wheels can steer up to five degrees opposite the front wheels, reducing turning radius by as much as one meter. At higher speeds, the rear wheels steer up to two degrees in the same direction as the front wheels to improve stability and lane-change behavior.

The system works in conjunction with Audi drive select and the adaptive air suspension’s dedicated off-road calibrations.

In Offroad+ mode, traction control thresholds are relaxed, electronic differential lock intervention increases and transmission shift mapping is revised to hold gears longer and maintain torque delivery in loose-surface conditions such as gravel, sand or snow.

FIRST-EVER A6 ALLROAD PLUG-IN HYBRID

For the first time in the model’s history, Audi is offering the A6 allroad as a plug-in hybrid.

The A6 allroad e-hybrid combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 252 PS with an electric motor rated at up to 105 kW. Combined system output is 367 PS and 500 Nm of torque.

Performance figures include:

  • 0-100 km/h: 5.5 seconds
  • Top speed: 250 km/h

A new 25.9 kWh battery pack, with 20.7 kWh usable, provides up to 95 km of WLTP electric range.

AC charging capability is rated at up to 11 kW, allowing a full recharge in approximately 2.5 hours.

Drivers can choose between EV and Hybrid operating modes, while regenerative braking intensity can be adjusted using steering-wheel paddles. Battery charge level targets can also be manually set through the MMI interface.

48 volt MHEV plus system with belt starter generator, powertrain generator, and electric auxiliaries enhances efficiency and performance.

ELECTRIFIED V6 TDI

Alongside the hybrid sits Audi’s 3.0-liter V6 TDI producing 299 PS and 580 Nm of torque.

The diesel powertrain incorporates three electrification elements:

  • Belt alternator starter
  • Powertrain generator
  • Electric-powered compressor

Together, the MHEV Plus system can contribute up to 24 PS of additional power while recovering up to 25 kW during braking.

Performance figures are slightly stronger than the plug-in hybrid:

  • 0-100 km/h: 5.4 seconds
  • Top speed: 250 km/h

A key component is the electrically driven compressor, which spins up to 90,000 rpm in 250 milliseconds to build boost pressure before the turbocharger reaches full effectiveness. Audi says maximum boost pressure develops nearly one second faster than in the previous-generation engine.

The result is intended to reduce turbo lag while improving both drivability and efficiency.

INTEGRATED BRAKE-BY-WIRE SYSTEM

All A6 allroad variants use Audi’s integrated brake control system.

The setup decouples the brake pedal from conventional hydraulic braking, allowing the vehicle to prioritize regenerative braking whenever possible.

The plug-in hybrid can recuperate up to 88 kW during deceleration, while MHEV-equipped models recover up to 25 kW.

Audi says transitions between regenerative and friction braking are designed to be imperceptible to the driver.
