Leica and Formula 1 have introduced the Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition, a special version of the German camera maker’s full-frame compact priced at $9,950 in the United States. The camera launches a licensing partnership between the two companies, combining the existing Q3 43’s imaging hardware with motorsport-inspired materials, dedicated accessories and an exclusive image treatment.
The U.S. announcement lists availability beginning October 20 through Leica Stores, Leica’s online store and specialist retailers. Its unveiling took place at Leica’s Los Angeles store and gallery, with Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and 2009 World Drivers’ Champion Jenson Button introducing the collaboration. The event also featured 26 motorsport photographs by Italian photographer Callo Albanese.

CARBON FIBER AND MICROVELOUR
The Formula 1 Edition’s most visible changes concern the camera’s finish and accessories. A wireless-charging handgrip incorporates a carbon fiber shell, complemented by a matching thumb rest and a soft-release button with a carbon inlay and red rim. Leica says the carbon fiber components are manufactured and tested in Germany.
Black Microvelour covers the body, drawing its texture from racing steering wheels. Red accents highlight selected controls, while F1 logos appear on the top plate and lens cap. The set includes a branded rope strap and dedicated packaging with a red interior accent.

AN EXCLUSIVE FORMULA 1 LOOK
The collaboration also includes a dedicated Formula 1 Leica Look, delivered through the Leica FOTOS app. It applies stronger contrast and richer saturation, providing a distinct rendering intended to suit the atmosphere of the circuit and paddock. The effect can be applied during shooting and previewed through the viewfinder.
That gives the edition a software distinction alongside its materials and branding. For photographers who prefer a finished image directly from the camera, the treatment offers a consistent visual approach without requiring a separate editing step. Its usefulness will ultimately depend on whether that higher-contrast, more saturated rendering suits the subject and the photographer’s taste.

FAMILIAR Q3 43 HARDWARE
Underneath those changes, the camera retains the Q3 43’s technical foundation. Its fixed APO-Summicron 43mm f/2 ASPH. lens is paired with a full-frame BSI CMOS sensor offering selectable 60-, 36- or 18-megapixel output. Hybrid autofocus and video capabilities round out the package.
The fixed focal length shapes its role around motorsport. A 43mm lens lends itself to people, details and scenes in the paddock, garage or spectator areas. Capturing a distant car on track calls for a different photographic setup; this Leica’s appeal lies in documenting the wider experience of a race weekend.
For U.S. buyers, the $9,950 package remains compatible with existing Leica Q3 and Q3 43 photography accessories. Its proposition centers on the established camera’s imaging capabilities, a coordinated set of special materials and accessories, and the Formula 1 connection.
