Find of the Day: 1997 Audi RS2 Cabriolet

I know what you’re thinking. Audi never built an RS2 Cabriolet – at least that ever was seen by someone willing to blabber about it outside of the factory grounds. That didn’t stop one owner though who went ahead and built his own. Now, it appears, you can make it your own providing your willing to acquire it from its current Belgian private party owner.

Here’s what we know based on the car’s listing over on European car classifieds site Mobile.de. The car was built on the chassis of a 1997 Audi Cabriolet converted to RS2 specification. That restoration was completed in 2009 when the car was registered as new.

Mileage is listed as 22,000 km, while the condition is listed “as new”, having been stored “only in the garage” and “only moved in good weather”.

More important is what components made their way to the car during the conversion. Here, the ad lists an original RS2 engine with its iconic “Powered by Porsche” valve cover – albeit polished. It was completely painted in RS Blue (now known as Nogaro Blue).

Its interior is grey, and appears to feature the Cabriolet’s unique and rare optional seat upgrade. To that the conversion added an original sport steering wheel of the airbag variety and gear knob. Though not mentioned in the ad, we also note the white gauge faces.

Beyond that, the photos reveal a few more things. The wheels appear to have the Porsche bolt pattern that might indicate original RS2 brakes that are, real or not, painted red. The wheels themselves appear to be more of a modular twist variety rather than the RS2 correct Cup 1s – still Porsche-looking in appearance but worth noting the difference as they aren’t original RS2 Cup 1s.

One last question we’d have if we were inquiring is whether or not the car was converted to quattro all-wheel drive. Oddly, we didn’t find that mentioned in the listing and that will likely be important to any buyer. All RS2s featured quattro whereas no Cabriolets ever offered quattro. All that said, we do know of at least one other quattro (and RS2-converted) Audi Cabriolet in the UK.

This car is for sale by a private party in Budapest, Hungary and is said to have had just two owners. And while it’s in reportedly perfect condition, it’s a clone that helps keep its price well south of a real RS2 Avant. This buyer has it listed at a nogotiable €42,900.
