Audi is making a pattern of tying its new Formula 1 era closely to its road car lineup with reveals coinciding with F1 rounds. First came the appearance of the new RS 5 Avant at the Australian Grand Prix and the latest example comes from China. Coinciding with the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, FAW Audi has opened pre-orders for the SQ8 for the Chinese market, bringing the high-performance SUV to the Chinese market as a new flagship offering.
The SQ8 launches with a pre-sale price of 1.14 million yuan (approximately $160,000 USD), with early reservation privileges including priority production and delivery for customers who place orders during the initial sales window.

F1-INSPIRED SQ8 “LIVERY VERSION”
Alongside the market introduction, Audi also revealed a special F1-inspired SQ8 show car created in collaboration with the Audi Formula 1 design team. In the Chinese press release, the company refers to this model as the Audi SQ8 “涂装版” (túzhuāng bǎn).
For western audiences, the wording requires a bit of translation context. “涂装版” literally translates to “livery version” or “painted version.” Rather than a formally named special edition, the phrase simply describes a vehicle finished in a bespoke racing-inspired paint scheme.
Importantly, the release does not describe this as a production model or limited edition available for purchase. Instead, the SQ8 涂装版 appears to be a promotional show car created specifically for the Chinese Grand Prix, part of Audi’s race-week activations in Shanghai.
The vehicle wears graphics developed by Audi’s F1 design studio, using minimalist geometric elements and competition-style colors intended to echo the look of Audi’s new Formula 1 car. It is being displayed through pop-up installations around the race weekend, reinforcing Audi’s broader “track-to-street” narrative as the brand begins its first Formula 1 season.
In other words, “涂装版” is more descriptive than official model designation, essentially identifying the vehicle as an SQ8 wearing a Formula 1-inspired livery rather than a numbered production special edition.

FROM THE TRACK TO THE STREET
Audi framed the launch around the brand’s longstanding relationship with motorsport, pointing to milestones such as quattro’s dominance in the World Rally Championship, 13 overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the V8 quattro’s success in DTM as examples of racing technologies that eventually filtered down to production cars.
That lineage now extends into Audi’s new Formula 1 program, with the SQ8 positioned as a flagship SUV that reflects the brand’s performance DNA while carrying its motorsport narrative into the luxury segment.
For Audi in China, the timing of the launch is by design. With Formula 1 returning to Shanghai and the four rings now officially on the grid, the SQ8’s introduction underscores how closely the brand intends to link its motorsport ambitions with its road car image in key global markets.
