ooooIYKYK, ISSUE #0003
In the run-up to the reveal of the new C9-generation A6 on Tuesday, an RS 6 friend gave me a call. He’d seen the photos leaked early of the A6 Avant and did what folks usually do when a new model comes out. He compared it to his current car, which was a current-generation C8 RS 6 Avant.
At one time, we each owned our own example of the 2021 Audi RS 6 RS Tribute Edition, one each of a run of 25 RS 6 Avants painted in Audi exclusive Nogaro Blue. In Audi circles, that color has earned icon status thanks to its association with the original Audi RS2 Avant. It’s an incredibly popular choice on the Audi exclusive palette, and in the case of the RS Tribute it was 25 and done. Once the run of cars was complete, Audi of America locked the color out specifically from American RS 6 Avant orders. That was in 2021, and the lock-out continued up until the 2024 model year. Exclusive indeed.
With such rarity and the perfect storm of wow-factor, it’s kind of hard to beat an RS Tribute. I sold mine last summer and it’ll probably always be the one that got away. My friend still has his, but he compares every subsequent car to it… most recently the new C9 A6.

I’d argue it’s an unfair comparison. This is a new car, yet to be seen in the flesh. Also, it’s not the top-of-the-line RS 6, but rather a base A6… well, an S-line well-optioned A6, but an A6 nonetheless.
But, what if it weren’t? What if it were an RS 6 in full Nogaro Blue special edition goodness? Of course, Audi hasn’t shown the RS 6 nor released any details of the car. The industry rumormill seems to point towards an evolved version of the existing twin-turbo V8 drivetrain augmented through plug-in hybridization.
Time will tell on the hardware, and also on the design. Even still, one can guess by using current design cues from the latest RS models to come from the Audi design team. In as much, I could take an A6 Avant, add in the bolder fender treatments, updated Avus-style wheels from the RS Q8, grille and other cues from the RS 3.

I created the images you see here using Adobe photoshop, each based on PR photos released with the A6 and found in the story below about that car. One image is a profile photo of the car, easy enough to get right since you’re dealing with two dimensions. While I could have spent the rest of my day creating photographs from other angles (and may in the future), I instead chose to focus on the augmenting a few design drawings.
Design being a core tenet of the Audi brand, Ingolstadt regularly releases official drawings of new cars when they are revealed. I love these sketches, but lack the skill to draw them myself. Fortunately, Audi releases plenty and those of the A6 Avant and also RS 3 Sportback facelift were done by the same designer (Francesco D’amore, follow him at @ciccilluz86 on Instagram).
It’s a little weird I guess, modifying design drawings by a real designer. But, they’re official PR images, so open for wider editorial use. Also, all the grafted-in elements from the RS 3 came from official PR sketches by the same designer. The net effect is (sort of) what we might hope to see from Audi… at least that’s what I was shooting for.
At the very least, my friend and I (and now you also) can evaluate the new C9 A6 in an apples and apples sort of way. Does it measure up? Let me know in the comments.

Deep Dive: The New Audi A6 Avant (C9)

The term “large chassis Audi” is internet jargon for big body Audi models. Technically, the term (and “small chassis Audi”) were coined to describe modern post-war Audi models in their earliest days. In that vein, “small chassis” refers to the corporate B-segment cars, while “large chassis” refers to the corporate C-segment and D-segment offerings. The latest A6 being the ninth-generation C-segment car, it’s technically a “C9” and technically a “large chassis”.
