Sometimes the best finds aren’t fastest performers, but the quirky workhorses that helped build the Auto Union legacy. Today’s Find of the Day is a 1961 Auto Union DKW F800/3 flatbed, one of the last examples built before the line was shut down. First registered in December 1961, this three-cylinder two-stroke single cab pickup (a.k.a. “sinca”) has been fully restored and now wears a fresh TÜV approval with historic (H) registration plates in Germany.
The F800 series was introduced in 1955, offered in van, pickup, and flatbed variations, and became a familiar sight on European roads in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Powered by a front-mounted three-cylinder two-stroke engine delivering roughly 40 horsepower, the truck was compact, efficient, and well-suited to postwar Germany’s rapidly growing economy. Today, restored survivors are rare, making this example with Auto Union dealership signage on its bed cover especially interesting to collectors and brand enthusiasts alike.
Offered by longtime DKW specialist Martin Hesse Vehicle Trade in Wetzlar, Germany, the F800/3 comes with its flatbed and aforementioned tarpaulin, making it a practical classic that could serve as an ideal promotional or event vehicle. For Audi aficionados who appreciate the broader Auto Union story, this little flatbed offers a tangible connection to a unique chapter of Ingolstadt’s history—one that reminds us the four rings stood not just for speed and luxury, but also for utility and ingenuity.
