Audi Launches Native Spotify App With Video, Lyrics and Shared Listening

Audi is rolling out a new native Spotify app that runs directly through its infotainment system, bringing music videos, real-time lyrics and shared listening sessions to supported models. Available beginning October 21, the app introduces a more complete Spotify interface while adjusting which features are accessible according to whether the vehicle is moving or parked.

Audi says it is the first automaker to offer this fully native Spotify experience. The distinction concerns the app’s interface and functionality: Previous in-vehicle versions used standardized templates, while the new app brings familiar Spotify menus and navigation into an interface developed specifically for the vehicle’s displays.

The change means access to more of Spotify without connecting a smartphone. The app runs on the vehicle’s Android Automotive OS infotainment system and was developed through collaboration between Audi, Volkswagen Group software company Cariad and Spotify.

WHAT CHANGES INSIDE THE CAR

Beyond music playback, the new app supports Spotify DJ, music videos, real-time lyrics and Spotify Jam. The latter lets passengers scan a QR code to join a shared listening session and contribute songs to the queue, giving everyone a way to influence the soundtrack.

The available functions change with the vehicle’s operating status. While driving, the center MMI display hides music videos and lyrics, removes their associated controls from the Now Playing screen, and blocks sign-in and settings functions. Supported voice functions, including “Hey Audi” and Spotify DJ, remain available.

When parked, the center display gains access to video, lyrics and expanded browsing. In appropriately equipped vehicles, supported video and lyric functions can remain available on the front passenger display while the vehicle is moving.

That gives Audi’s passenger screen another defined use. It also extends the role of the infotainment system during time spent parked, including charging stops in the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron.

WHICH AUDIS GET IT?

Initial availability covers supported models from model year 2026 onward built on Audi’s Premium Platform Electric and Premium Platform Combustion architectures. Those include the A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A5, Q5 and combustion-engine A6. Audi also lists the Q7 and Q9 for availability at their respective market launches.

The announcement does not extend support to older Audi infotainment systems. Compatibility depends on the vehicle’s model, equipment and software configuration, so the presence of an Audi Application Store alone should not be taken as confirmation that a particular car supports the new app.

Audi says the rollout covers 47 markets across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. Initially, the new native experience is available exclusively through the Audi Application Store.

FREE DOWNLOAD, SPOTIFY ACCOUNT REQUIRED

The app is free to download, but users need a Spotify account. Any Spotify subscription charges depend on the selected plan and market.

For Audi, the launch is another step toward making its infotainment system a destination for apps that owners would otherwise use through their phones. For Spotify users with an eligible car, the more immediate benefit is straightforward: a broader set of familiar features integrated into the vehicle, with separate roles for the center and passenger displays.
