OVERVIEW

As Audi studied updates to the second-generation 100, Ferdinand Piëch also explored a coupé derivative intended for the American market, according to Car Design Archives. The proposal would have given Audi a more distinctive model for its U.S. showrooms, where dealers also sold Porsche, while supporting Piëch’s ambition to move the brand upmarket.

The photographed model has the front and rear styling of the C2 Audi 100/5000, but a shortened wheelbase and a two-door body. Its sealed-beam headlamps and U.S.-style front side markers identify the pictured configuration as an Audi 5000 proposal, rather than simply a European-market Audi 100 study. A revised roof and rear-quarter-window treatment distinguish it from the production two-door Audi 100 sedan.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

Car Design Archives describes the proposal as a three-door coupé and connects it to a six-cylinder engine study underway at the time. The photographs establish the exterior proposal, but do not show whether the rear panel opened as a hatch. Until further documentation surfaces, “three-door” and the proposed engine should be attributed to Car Design Archives rather than treated as independently confirmed specifications of the pictured model.

The surviving images published by Car Design Archives show a detailed, full-size presentation model photographed from both front and rear three-quarter angles. They do not establish whether Audi built a running prototype, how many versions of the design were made, or who was responsible for its styling.

OUTCOME

The Audi 5000 Coupé did not enter production. Car Design Archives raises two possible explanations: resources directed toward the quattro project, which began development in 1977, and changes in product planning around the second oil crisis. Neither has been documented as the reason Audi ended this proposal.

For now, the model records an otherwise little-known attempt to give the U.S.-market 5000 a more distinctive body style. Its precise date, design authorship, mechanical specification and reason for cancellation remain open questions.
